The 2009 NFL season saw the San Francisco 49ers finish at 8-8 and second place in the NFC West. Many are forecasting bigger things for the Niners in 2010, for a myriad of reasons. Among them are quarterback Alex Smith’s seeming resurgence to competence, a very good defense, an offensive line that should be improved, and an Arizona Cardinals team that saw a mass exodus of impact players to which maybe only the Kentucky basketball team can relate.
San Francisco does need to improve offensively, however. They were 27th in the league in total yards last season, and 18th in points per game. Their passing offense was 22nd in the NFL, and their rushing offense was a surprisingly low 25th. Still, with the drafting of two offensive linemen in the first round, they should see a marked improvement in that category.
KEY ADDITIONS
David Carr (QB) – As with most NFL teams this off-season, the 49ers saw precious little player movement, and as such, Carr counts as a key addition for this team as the backup quarterback. Really, the former No. 1 overall pick (which the 49ers now have two of on their roster) is only there in case Alex Smith falters completely, which isn’t expected after his 18-touchdown season in 2009. Only those who play in 16-team leagues and have Smith as their starter should think about wasting a roster spot on Carr.
KEY DEPARTURES
Isaac Bruce (WR) – Bruce only caught 21 passes for 264 yards for San Francisco in 2009, but he does represent probably the most significant departure, unless you count cornerback Walt Harris, who missed the entire season with an ACL injury, or backup offensive lineman Tony Pashos (like we said, the 49ers had little player movement).
ROOKIE TO WATCH
Anthony Davis (OT) & Mike Iupati (OG) – Head coach Mike Singletary wants to win by grinding it out on the ground, and he’s set his team up to do so for the foreseeable future by drafting right tackle Davis with the 11th overall pick and guard Iupati with the 17th overall pick. Davis is more known for his pass-blocking prowess than his road-grading skills, but he’s capable in this area. And anyway, Iupati will more than make up for it, as he was considered the best run blocker of any offensive lineman in the draft. He’s nasty and has a mean streak, though he has a bit of a penchant for holding that he’ll need to improve on. These two are the reasons why Frank Gore is being looked at as a potential top-five fantasy football pick.

BRUNO BOYS SPOTLIGHT
Alex Smith (QB) – Really, the success of the 49ers will come down to Smith. Yes, their defense has the ability to be outstanding, and their running game does as well, but Smith simply has to display to everyone that he can be an asset for a full season, not just parts of a season. In 11 games in 2009, Smith threw for just over 2,000 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 60.5 percent of his throws. Now that he has a better offensive line around him and a real threat at wideout in Michael Crabtree, there’s no reason for him to sink back into mediocrity. That said, for fantasy football purposes, he should be drafted as a late-round pick and used as a QB2. Entrusting him as even a platoon starter is too risky, though there will be some weeks that Smith has a favorable match-up.
