Just because the 2010 NFL season recently came to an end doesn’t mean that you can’t start preparing for the upcoming fantasy football season. Comprised of 11 members of the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Staff and guest draftee Jim Day from Fantasy Football Whiz we bring to you the first of many Fantasy Football 2011 Mock Drafts. This draft will be a 16-round affair based on a standard scoring league (Pass TDs - 4 points, All Other TDs - 6 points, 25 Yards Passing - 1 point, 10 Yards Rushing/Receiving - 1 point). Outside of having to field a starting lineup made up of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 D/ST, owners are free to fill out their rosters any way they like.
Commentary after each pick is provided by the Bruno Boys staff member who made that pick. The draft started on February 10, 2011. Be sure to check back on a regular basis for updates and feel free to give your opinion in our comments section.
2011 FANTASY FOOTBALL MOCK DRAFT ROUND 1 RESULTS
1.01: Bruno Boys Jimbo - Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings — When healthy, there isnt a more consistent or reliable running back than Adrian Peterson. I passed up on the trendy option in Michael Vick because I still feel like with your Round 1 pick, especially No.1, you have to get yourself a stud running back. entering 2011, there isn’t a better running back in the game today than Peterson.
1.02: Bruno Boys Brad - Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars — I thought about Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson here, and even thought about going a controversial direction (Aaron Rodgers crossed my mind). In the end logic took over and told me this was not the time in the draft to gamble on selecting a quarterback. Thus I decided to go with the solid top-end running back with minimal downside in MJD. Yes the knee injury has some worried, however I am not one of them.
1.03: Bruno Boys JRonstadt - Arian Foster, RB, Houston Texans — I worry about the 393 touches in 15 games Foster withstood in 2010, but it’s hard to fret too much about landing fantasy’s No.1 performer with the third pick. Foster, who should have the Texans backfield pretty much all to himself in 2011, possesses all the characteristics of an elite back; size, vision, power and speed. Only time will tell if durability can be added to his list of attributes.
1.04: Bruno Boys Cavigs - Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans — With 1,609 total yards Johnson didn’t quite live up to the preseason hype that he was going to flirt with 2,500 total yards. However, he is still an explosive running back that can make game changing plays. The other guy I considered at 1.04 was Jamaal Charles but in the end I went with the running back who doesn’t lose touches around the endzone.
1.05: Bruno Boys Cory - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers — There were several different players I looked at here, but there’s so much to like about Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall. He’s coming off of a second consecutive 1,000 yard rushing season, and last year he had 13 rushing touchdowns. His receiving numbers aren’t great and he isn’t a threat to rush for 2,000 receiving yards, however Mendenhall scores six pointers. I think he’s got the ability to do that 15 times next season, especially behind what should be an improved Pittsburgh offensive line.
1.06: FF Whiz - Jim Day - Roddy White, WR, Atlanta Falcons — This would be an easier pick in a ppr league, but since it’s not, I will stop the run on running backs and go with Mr. Consistency. White has had back-to-back double digit touchdown seasons and has averaged 1,281 receiving yards per season over the last four. Look for him to hit both of those marks again in 2011.
1.07: Bruno Boys James - Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs — This pick became a no-brainer for me. Charles is entering his fourth season next year and is coming off of a fantastic 2010 season. He finished No.3 overall at the running back position in fantasy points despite receiving 60 less carries than the No.2 guy and being inherently the second running back on his own team. I think the Chiefs find another wide receiver opposite Dwayne Bowe which should make it even harder for defenses to target Charles in 2011.
1.08: Bruno Boys Rich - Michael Turner, WR, Atlanta Falcons — With my top choice Jamaal Charles taken off the board just before me, I chose to go with a running back who I know I can count on week after week. After an injury plagued 2009 Turner played in all 16 games in 2010 and while he doesn’t catch the ball…ever, Burner Turner is one of the better runners in the league. Expect him to make four straight years with at least 10 touchdowns.
1.09: Bruno Boys Ryan - LeSean McCoy, RB, Philadelphia Eagles —I was considering Andre Johnson with this pick, however feel good about getting McCoy. Running backs have been heavy involved in Andy Reid’s offense for year’s and McCoy was really productive last season. As long as Michael Vick is running the show the Philadelphia Eagles offense will continue to be fruitful.
1.10: Bruno Boys Lane - Ray Rice, RB, Baltimore Ravens — Couldn’t believe my mancrush fell this far. His touch and yardage numbers are undeniable, and with Willis McGahee likely out of town, the touchdowns have to be coming. Rice was solid in 2010 and I’m expecting seven to eight touchdowns to go along with his usual gaudy yardage totals.
1.11: Bruno Boys Kyle - Michael Vick, QB, Philadelphia Eagles — Yep, I did it. As disgraceful as I think he is as a human being, Vick is off the charts for fantasy football. Why? Well, consider the fact that despite missing a quarter of the season, he was still second among all players in fantasy football points with 300, and that he had one fewer rushing touchdown than Maurice Jones-Drew and Jamaal Charles combined.
1.12: Bruno Boys Allie - Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers — What do the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings and the Oakland Raiders have in common? They’re among the 23 teams that are kicking themselves for passing on Aaron Rodgers in the 2005 NFL Draft. I’m not going to make the same mistake. Rodgers is the highest ranked quarterback on my early-2011 rankings big board and there isn’t any better value at pick 1.12. The Super Bowl XLV MVP had 16 or more fantasy points in 11 of 15 games last year and is a lock to approach 4,000 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. While Michael Vick might get you more yards with his feet, you can’t overlook the fact that Rodgers added 50-plus fantasy points as a runner in each of his last two seasons. Fantasy experts and owners alike are sure to debate Vick vs. Rodgers for many months to come. Both merit consideration, but I have more confidence in Rodgers’ overall ability to get the job done week in and week out.
