2009 Fantasy Football Draft Sheet
2009 Fantasy Football Draft Sheet

This is the time of year when I start thinking about turkey and mashed potatoes, Thursday Night Football, holiday travel plans, and, of course, the fantasy playoffs. While I love a good league championship, I’ve never had more to play for than I do this year with my Buffalo Wild Wings All-Star Blogger League – I so want to win that trip to Miami during the Super Bowl. So, I’ve been taking a good hard look at my team to see which guys have an easy path ahead during the fantasy playoffs – and which do not. Since my team is hardly going to interest all of you, I thought I’d expand a bit and look at players from all the offensive skill positions that have a sweet stretch of match-ups for Weeks 14-16. Remember, this is a ranking for the playoffs only and you should always have your own lineup in mind when you read these names!

First up, quarterbacks. Let’s take a look at 4 guys in pretty good shape from Weeks 14-16. (Note: The opposing team’s current pass defense ranking is listed in parentheses.)

PLAYER Week 14 Opponent Week 15 Opponent Week 16 Opponent AVG Opponent Ranking
Drew Brees ATL (28th) DAL (20th) TB (12th) 20.0
Philip Rivers DAL (20th) CIN (27th) TEN (32nd) 26.3
Kurt Warner SF (25th) DET (24th) STL (30th) 26.3
Matt Schaub SEA (15th) STL (30th) MIA (19th) 21.3

Well, that’s great and all, but considering most of those guys are top 10 QBs (only Warner is not a top 10 QB as he ranks 14th using FFToday’s statistics), what are the chances that you’ll get your paws on one of them? If you’ve got a mediocre quarterback with a weak playoffs schedule, and your chances are already looking good to make it to the playoffs, it couldn’t hurt to try and bolster your squad with one of the players listed above. But, if your league isn’t big on trades – or at least trades including marquee players – then maybe you need to expand your horizons. So, what about guys ranked in the 10-20 range, guys who are on the start/sit bubble; which of them has a solid playoffs schedule?

PLAYER Week 14 Opponent Week 15 Opponent Week 16 Opponent AVG Opponent Ranking
Carson Palmer MIN (29th) SD (4th) KC (25th) 19.3
Jay Cutler GB (7th) BAL (16th) MIN (29th) 17.3
Joe Flacco DET (24th) CHI (11th) PIT (13th) 16.0
Mark Sanchez TB (12th) ATL (28th) IND (5th) 15.0

What about the rest of the positions? Which bubble players have decent matchups in the playoffs? For RBs and WRs I looked at guys ranked in the 25-50ish range and for TEs I looked at players in the 10-20ish range.

RBs Week 14 Opponent Week 15 Opponent Week 16 Opponent AVG Opponent Ranking
Clinton Portis OAK (30th) NYG (24th) DAL (12th) 22.0
Laurence Maroney CAR (22nd) BUF (32nd) JAC (23rd) 25.6
Pierre Thomas/Mike Bell ATL (20th) DAL (12th) TB (29th) 20.3
Jamaal Charles BUF (32nd) CLE (31st) CIN (5th) 22.6
WRs
Dwayne Bowe BUF (16th) CLE (30th) CIN (27th) 24.3
Steve Breaston SF (28th) DET (25th) STL (29th) 27.3
Malcom Floyd DAL (22nd) CIN (27th) TEN (32nd) 27.0
TEs
Todd Heap DET (25th) CHI (10th) PIT (13th) 16.0
Brandon Pettigrew BAL (17th) ARI (18th) SF (28th) 21.0
Daniel Fells TEN (32nd) HOU (20th) ARI (18th) 23.3

Wow, loving Maroney’s playoffs schedule – granted this is New England we’re talking about, so the backfield time splits are going to be less defined, but I’d certainly feel good about plugging Maroney (and possibly other NE running backs) into my lineup during the fantasy playoffs.

I went with Jamaal Charles rather than Larry Johnson here since I’m convinced Johnson’s carries and playing time will be quite limited. But hey, if Johnson proves to still have an impact for the Chiefs, then you could certainly take advantage of that Week 14-15 punch against the two worst rush defenses in the league with either Charles or Johnson.

As for the WRs I focused on, I think Dwayne Bowe has nowhere to go but up in the WR rankings and Steve Breaston will likely take advantage of Anquan Boldin’s injury status moving forward. And how about Floyd? He’s the latest in my series of fantasy crushes – with teams focusing on Vincent Jackson, Floyd is bound to take advantage of his single coverage and sweet, sweet playoff schedule.

Meanwhile, with Chris Cooley and Owen Daniels suffering injuries, the TE position has been in the spotlight a lot more than usual. If you need a replacement TE and are wondering which guys you could get for cheap, cheap, cheap or just off the waiver wire, maybe roll the dice on Pettigrew or Fells. Their playoff schedules are pretty decent, and both guys are facing relatively lax pass defenses from here on out. They probably won’t be the reason your team wins, but they won’t hurt your squad either. Sometimes that’s really all you need.

Whoops, looks like the third chart might be the wrong one - we’ll get that fixed!

Third Chart is now corrected with accurate information regarding, RBs, WRs, TEs instead of being a duplicate of second chart.

Great work, as always! And good catch to “The Hazean.”

That’s great work and very interesting info, but what’s it mean when you don’t have a single player out of those you listed?

JB - Well you could certainly make a move to try and trade for some of these guys (or just snag them off of waivers depending on how deep your league is). You could also tell me who you have - or who you could easily get - and I’d be happy to take a quick look at their schedules for you. There are several players with potential that aren’t listed here of course…

Great stuff! I am very encouraged to see that I have at least one of those players in each category with the exception of RB. Rivers, Flacco, Floyd, and Heap. I’m solid at RB with MJD, R. Brown, Slaton, and R. Williams.

Sara - I’m really not to concerned about my team, they are performing pretty well except one of them.  I guess I was just thinking it would be interesting to see more players listed here.  Other than that I think what you have here is excellent information. I am assuming that my players aren’t listed cause most of them are towards the top of there positions.  Here is my team QBs (play 1) P Manning, Favre, Cutler RBs (2) Chris Johnson (who someone cut before last week, and was on my bench on sunday), Forte, R Brown, Mendenhall, WR/TE (3 combined) A Johnson, MSW, Burelson, Collie, Gonzo(atl) and Shaincoe.  Unfortunately our league doesn’t allow trades (there was some collusion a couple years ago where someone got paid to make a trade) but hopefully we will be allowing them next year.

Thanks Brian, and good luck! JB, I really wouldn’t be concerned about your team either (seriously, way to score on the QB front and I have NO clue how someone cut Chris Johnson). The article was really meant to just provide advice on a handful of borderline starts, not to be an exhaustive list. With a few more hours in my day perhaps I could’ve put up a full list. smile

I have Schaub/Bowe from this list, but I think the rest of my team should be ok… I have the following team (after I traded Knox/McGahee for S. Jax/Jennings and Mendenhall for Celek a few weeks back)
QB - Schaub, A. Smith
WR - R. White, Jennings, Bowe, K. Walter, L. Moore
RB - S-Jax, Gore, Westbrook, Moats
TE - Celek
K - Crosby, Stover (get Vinateri when hes back and drop these 2?)
DEF - San. Fran (what D should I try and target for help?)

No defense listed but I’ do believe I’m set there.I got Arizona for week 15 and 16 when they face Detroit and St.Louis and Atlanta on the bench for week 17 when they face Tampa Bay. Pretty much already locked in the playoffs so not to worried about using both defenses till playoffs start.

As far as defenses are concerned, I’m banking on Cinci for weeks 11-13 (Oak, Cle, Det).  Do I go after the Chiefs for weeks 14-15 instead (Buf, Cle)?
