I grabbed a bunch of fliers in the last 4 or 5 rounds of the FFLibrarian Monster League: WR Devery Henderson (New Orleans), WR Pierre Garcon (Indianapolis), TE Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit), and RB Tyrell Sutton (Green Bay). It was a 16-team, 16-round draft which is, quite frankly, the biggest league that I’ve ever played in. I wanted a lot of guys with moderate risk and substantial potential – I mean why play it safe in such a big league? And trust me, the guys listed here are not particularly safe picks; many are sitting several players back on the depth chart, but these guys really are ripe with potential. I’ve been keeping an eye on the drafts I’ve been a part of so far to see who some of the favorite flier picks are and thought I’d bring you some of my favorite late round snags I’ve seen.

Warning: Packers special here. There are three Green Bay Packers that I’d like to highlight here. The first two, TE Jermichael Finley and WR James Jones, are frequently showing up in the last few rounds of my drafts and for good reason. While Finley is expected to split time with Donald Lee this season, he’s been impressive in camp and Rodgers is singing his praises. That adds up to a winning combination in my book and worthy of a bench spot if you can make room for 2 TEs on your squad. Jones is entering his magical third year as a receiver, though it’s really his good health that might make a difference in his 2009 season. There are a lot of receivers in Green Bay right now, but I say hitch your flier horse to Finley and Jones for the greatest value.

My final Packers pick is RB Tyrell Sutton – at this time I am pretty much the only one grabbing Sutton and that’s in large part thanks to the fact that he went to Northwestern, my Alma Mater. But I’ve seen this guy impress time and time again (he can run! he can catch!); mark my words, Sutton will be making an impact before long. He’s little, but he packs a punch. As he’s buried somewhat deep in the depth charts, for now I can only recommend you snag Sutton in a similar spot that I did (16th and final round of that deep league) if at all. But remember his name…

Another running back to keep in mind is someone with a rather memorable name: RB BenJavrus Green-Ellis (New England). Many of us snagged him off the waiver wire last year, and yet he seems to have slipped into oblivion with all of the backs on the scene in New England. BenJarvus has been putting up decent preseason numbers, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him coming up with a good chunk of the NE action if anything happens to the rest of their less-than-hardy backs. So, while your league mate might grab Fred Taylor thanks to his historical skills, you ride that one out and take a late flier on BenJarvus.

Finally, another RB you might want to grab at the end of your draft is RB Justin Forsett (Seattle). In general, Seattle players are off of a lot of radars thanks to their unfortunate 2008 season. But don’t write these guys off quite yet. Again, another murky backfield and an offensive line that already needs help, but Forsett is a particularly attractive flier in PPR leagues. He’s got good hands (he led the team in receptions in the week 2 preseason game against Denver with 7 receptions for 58 yards) and his youthful potential makes him someone you’ll want to remember as the season continues.

Kudos to you, Sara, for noticing the talent that others have missed in Green Bay. As someone who lives in Green Bay and watches these guys practice and play, I still can’t figure out why people are drooling over the Bears and Vikings while the Packers are an afterthought.

You’re spot on with the Jermichael Finley recommendation. That guy is going to be a monster, a top five TE in a season or two. Charles Woodson actually labeled him “unguardable”. No small compliment from an elite cover guy who’s seen pretty much everything the NFL has to offer.

I really like Sutton and Jones too, but (barring injuries) they’re not going to get enough opportunities to make a splash. Jordy Nelson may actually have more upside than Jones. The Packers have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to offensive playmakers. Jones and Nelson would probably be #2 WRs on quite a few NFL teams…

Tom Pelissero of the GB Press Gazette is reporting that the Packers are believed to have released RB Tyrell Sutton and will try to re-sign him to the practice squad.

Sutton was snatched up by Carolina, which really does nothing to lower my preseason love for him (though what could?). Matt is right, the splash from Sutton might be small since he continues to be a few cats back, but he’s a name to remember. Perhaps it’s the Broncos fan in me who preps for a decimated running back corps…

While Nelson certainly stepped up while Jones was injured, I just have this gut feeling that Jones is the one who will impress and have the most potential. Absolutely keep an eye on Nelson as well; either could pan out as a great flier.
