Normal fantasy football leagues have come to an end and what a great season it was. We hope that you did well in your league, or leagues, but if you’re still looking for some fantasy football action while the playoffs go on, and you’re looking for some help then look no further because the Bruno Boys will be here throughout the postseason. As such we’ll be releasing our normal weekly position rankings to help you best decide which players to go with in our Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge. To see where this round’s wide receivers rank continue reading the Championship Round edition of the Bruno Boys Weekly Wide Receiver Rankings.
1. Sidney Rice (Minnesota Vikings) @ New Orleans
Rice ripped Dallas apart in the Divisional Playoffs with a six-catch, 141-yard, three-touchdown game, and he showed in the postseason what he had shown all along in the regular season – that he’s Brett Favre’s favorite target. Rice’s breakout season continues in the NFC Championship Game against the Saints.
Point Projection: 17 points
2. Marques Colston (New Orleans Saints) vs. Minnesota
Colston led the Saints with six receptions and 84 receiving yards last week in the team’s dominant win over the Cardinals, a game in which he also caught a touchdown pass. Colston is New Orleans’ most consistent threat on the outside, and the player Drew Brees looks for more than any other. That’s worth a lot when it comes right down to it, simply because of the way the Saints throw the ball around. Minnesota was tough on Dallas last week, but through the course of the regular season, they weren’t nearly as hazardous to the health of the opposition’s passing game, giving up 18.6 fantasy points to the wide receiver position on a weekly basis.
Point Projection: 15 points
3. Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts) vs. New York Jets
It was encouraging to see Vincent Jackson gain over 100 yards even though Darrelle Revis was often covering him last week. Jackson’s performance shows that there is hope for elite wide outs against Revis yet. Wayne caught a team-high eight passes for a team-high 63 yards and one touchdown in the Colts’ win over the Ravens last week, but he’ll still be challenged by Revis and the Jets’ No. 1 pass defense, so you may want to temper your expectations just slightly.
Point Projection: 13 points
4. Robert Meachem (New Orleans Saints) vs. Minnesota **CHECK INJURY STATUS**
Meachem did absolutely nothing against the Cardinals last week – literally. He didn’t catch any passes and, obviously, didn’t gain any yards as a result. That will most certainly change this week, as you have to expect a much closer affair, meaning more passing attempts than rushing attempts for the Saints, unlike last week.
Point Projection: 11 points
5. Percy Harvin (Minnesota Vikings) @ New Orleans
Harvin was a disappointment as a pass-catcher against the Cowboys, coming up with only a single reception for a single yard. However, he showed his versatility by running the ball three times for 23 yards, giving the Saints something to think about. He’ll also undoubtedly be used in the passing game more often this week in what could be a high-scoring back-and-forth affair.
Point Projection: 8 points
6. Devery Henderson (New Orleans Saints) vs. Minnesota
Henderson made the big play last week against Arizona – a 44-yard touchdown reception – that we got used to seeing him make in 2008 but that was missing for much of this year. Henderson had four receptions for 80 yards total in the game, but we expect those statistics to ebb, at least somewhat, this week. Remember, Drew Brees does make a living by spreading the ball around, focusing on a different receiver nearly every week.
Point Projection: 6 points
7. Pierre Garcon (Indianapolis Colts) vs. New York Jets
Garcon was second on the Colts with 10 targets last week. He caught five of those passes, but for only 34 yards, including a long of 11 yards. He could be a solid complementary piece this weekend with Darrelle Revis likely all over Reggie Wayne, but the Jets are a potent defense against the pass, so he does carry some risk with him. During the regular season, the Jets held opposing wide receivers to just 10.7 points per contest.
Point Projection: 6 points
8. Jerricho Cotchery (New York Jets) @ Indianapolis
If you are to use a Jets’ wide out this week (a dangerous thing to do), it should probably be Cotchery. He caught three passes for 25 yards in New York’s upset win over San Diego and has been the team’s most reliable wide out all season when healthy. Nevertheless, it’s the ground game that the Jets rely on, meaning Cotchery’s value is limited in general.
Point Projection: 5 points
9. Bernard Berrian (Minnesota Vikings) @ New Orleans
Berrian was actually second in catches and receiving yards with three and 32, respectively, for the Vikings in their win over the Cowboys. He was also targeted the second-most times with six balls thrown his way, though his lack of production mirrors what he had done for most of the regular season.
Point Projection: 4 points
10. Braylon Edwards (New York Jets) @ Indianapolis
Edwards caught two passes for 41 yards last week after being targeted five times. He’s untrustworthy and unreliable, and not someone you should be taking a chance on, because odds are, he’ll simply disappoint you.
Point Projection: 4 points
11. Austin Collie (Indianapolis Colts) vs. New York Jets
Collie caught four passes for 52 yards and one score against the Ravens last week, and he’s been playing well from the last quarter of the season on. But, the Jets have the No. 1 pass defense in the league, meaning Collie will have his work cut out for him in this one. The Colts’ wide out did tally 94 yards on six catches against New York in Week 16, but remember, he saw an increase in targets due to Jim Caldwell resting Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon early in the second half.
Point Projection: 4 points
12. Brad Smith (New York Jets) @ Indianapolis
Smith didn’t make any noise last week as a receiver, though he is often quiet in that regard, so that should not have been a surprise. His points, if any, will come out of the Wildcat formation this week, as they often have all season long.
