Normal fantasy football leagues have come to an end and what a great season it was. We hope that you did well in your league, or leagues, but if you’re still looking for some fantasy football action while the playoffs go on, and you’re looking for some help then look no further because the Bruno Boys will be here throughout the postseason. As such we’ll be releasing our normal weekly position rankings to help you best decide which players to go with in our Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge. To see where this round’s wide receivers rank continue reading the Divisional Round edition of the Bruno Boys Weekly Wide Receiver Rankings.
1. Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals) @ New Orleans
Fitzgerald’s postseason swagger continued from last year’s playoff into this season’s tournament as he grabbed two scoring passes as part of a six-catch, 82-yard day against the 5th ranked pass defense of the Green Bay Packers during Wild Card weekend. New Orleans was just 26th in the league in pass defense this season, so expect Fitzgerald’s torrid streak in the playoffs to continue at least for another weekend.
Point Projection: 18 points
2. Miles Austin (Dallas Cowboys) @ Minnesota
Austin continues to blow away the competition, as last week, he had 82 receiving yards on seven receptions, including one for a touchdown, against the Philadelphia Eagles. Minnesota’s pass defense scares nobody, as they ranked 19th in the league in that category, and 23rd in passing touchdowns allowed over the course of the year, making Austin an outstanding option, as you might expect.
Point Projection: 17 points
3. Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Baltimore
Wayne really didn’t produce at the end of the season, which hurt fantasy owners near and far, but he can help make up for that this week, and we think he will. True, Baltimore was exceptional against the Pats, but that was with a banged-up Tom Brady and no Wes Welker. Indy, on the other hand, is healthy and has the league MVP throwing passes.
Point Projection: 17 points
4. Sidney Rice (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Dallas
Rice had a breakout season with over 1,300 receiving yards while scoring eight touchdowns, and he’ll continue his excellence against the Cowboys. Their defense has been outstanding in each of the past two weeks, but the fact remains that like so many other squads, they’ll focus on shutting down Adrian Peterson, leaving Brett Favre some time to unload to his wide outs – namely his favorite one, Rice.
Point Projection:16 points
5. Marques Colston (New Orleans Saints) vs. Arizona
You saw what the Packers were able to do against the Cardinals last week, correct? And that was with Arizona playing at home. Though we don’t expect nearly 100 points to go on the board this week (then again, it’s certainly possible), we also don’t expect Arizona to be able to stop New Orleans’ passing game, starting with their No. 1 wide out, Colston.
Point Projection: 15 points
6. Robert Meachem (New Orleans Saints) vs. Arizona
Bet you didn’t know that Meachem was actually fifth on New Orleans’ team in receptions this year with only 45, did you? Okay, maybe you did, but if you play fantasy football, you know that that mattered very little considering his penchant for finding the end zone. Despite coming in fifth in receptions, he tied Marques Colston with nine scores on the year, and he’ll get on the board again this week.
Point Projection: 14 points
7. Anquan Boldin (Arizona Cardinals) @ New Orleans **CHECK INJURY STATUS**
We’re expecting Boldin to play this week, unlike last week’s contest against Green Bay. But think of what he could have done had he been on the field during Arizona’s 51-45 overtime victory. There’s no reason to think that Boldin, who is even only at 90 percent can’t exploit the Saints’ mediocre secondary.
Point Projection: 13 points
8. Vincent Jackson (San Diego Chargers) vs. New York Jets
While we love what Jackson did during the regular season as a whole, this is an obviously a scary match-up. New York cornerback Darrelle Revis shuts down every receiver that looks at him, and Jackson was not always consistent during the year. Tread carefully here.
Point Projection: 11 points
9. Percy Harvin (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Dallas
Harvin was the offensive rookie of the year this season, and for good reason, considering he had six touchdown receptions, nearly 800 receiving yards, two kickoff returns for scores and over 100 rushing yards. He’s dangerous in every situation, and won’t let up this week against Dallas’ 20th-ranked pass defense.
Point Projection: 10 points
10. Derrick Mason (Baltimore Ravens) @ Indianapolis
Mason is the team’s one and only receiving threat, though that meant little last week against New England because the Ravens had no use for the pass considering how well they ran the ball, tallying 52 carries for 234 yards. It’s likely they’ll be forced to throw much more this week, either to keep pace with the Colts’ offense or catch up to them, making Mason a solid option.
Point Projection: 9 points
11. Pierre Garcon (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Baltimore
Garcon battled a hand injury towards the end of the season, but all indications are that he’s fine. That’s good news for the Colts, who use his down field speed in various ways, either getting him the ball or opening things up underneath for Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne. Either way, Garcon is going to be a factor, and we see him catching at least one deep pass and a few more intermediate throws.
Point Projection: 8 points
12. Devery Henderson (New Orleans Saints) vs. Arizona
The Cardinals were 23rd in the league in pass defense during the regular season, and showed why against the Packers last week. Henderson only scored twice during the season, but he was second on the Saints with just over 800 receiving yards. That’s a pattern we expect to hold this week as Henderson finishes the day without a score but in the area of 70 receiving yards.
Point Projection: 7 points
13. Jerricho Cotchery (New York Jets) @ San Diego
Cotchery caught six passes for 67 yards from Mark Sanchez last week as the Jets beat the Bengals, enabling them to travel to the West Coast to take on San Diego. Cotchery remains the one dependable wide receiver for New York, and if the Jets are to keep pace in this game, they’re going to have to throw, meaning some good things for Cotchery are on the horizon.
Point Projection: 7 points
14. Austin Collie (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Baltimore
Collie was third on the Colts’ squad with 60 catches this season and ended the year on a high note, with seven or more fantasy points in four of his last five games. Even with Pierre Garcon back and the Ravens’ defense coming to town, Collie should post respectable numbers. However come playoff challenges, even respectable sometimes isn’t good enough.
Point Projection: 7 points
15. Roy Williams (Dallas Cowboys) @ Minnesota
Williams actually caught five passes for 59 yards as the Cowboys throttled the Eagles last week. Needless to say, this was an improvement over his recent work, and his five catches were just one fewer than he had from Weeks 14-17 combined. We still don’t trust him, however, and neither should you.
Point Projection: 6 points
16. Early Doucet (Arizona Cardinals) @ New Orleans
Doucet has really turned it on in the last month or so, culminating with a six-catch, 77-yard, two-touchdown game last week vs. the Packers. The former third-round pick was targeted six times and caught each pass. Even with Boldin back, the Cardinals will utilize Doucet’s abilities.
Point Projection: 6 points
17. Malcolm Floyd (San Diego Chargers) vs. New York Jets
Quietly, Floyd had a very solid season for the Chargers, racking up nearly 800 receiving yards on 45 catches. Unfortunately, he had just one touchdown, which helps explain the silence. He and the Chargers face the best pass defense in the NFL this week against the Jets, but with Vincent Jackson being the focus of Darrelle Revis, Floyd may have a few more opportunities than usual to make a play.
Point Projection: 5 points
18. Braylon Edwards (New York Jets) @ San Diego
Braylon Edwards dropped a sure-fire touchdown on a deep pass in the end zone from Mark Sanchez that would have turned Sanchez’s very good game into a great one last weekend, and Edwards’ lousy game (two catches, 15 yards), into a good one. We don’t trust the oft-butterfingered wide out much in the same way we don’t trust Roy Williams, despite the obvious talents both possess.
Point Projection: 5 points
19. Patrick Crayton (Dallas Cowboys) @ Minnesota
Crayton caught just three passes for 34 yards last week against the Eagles as Dallas mostly ran their way to a victory. It will be harder for them to do that against the Vikings’ stout run defense, so we’ll probably see them dial up the passing game more often. Unfortunately for Crayton, that’s a passing game in which he’s the fourth wheel.
Point Projection: 4 points
20. Steve Breaston (Arizona Cardinals) @ New Orleans **CHECK A.BOLDIN’S INJURY STATUS**
Somewhat unexpectedly, Breaston had a huge game against the Packers last week, leading Arizona in catches, with seven, and receiving yards, with 125, while also scoring a touchdown. The fact remains, however, that he was less and less productive as the regular season wore on, and with Anquan Boldin possibly coming back, Breaston may once again see his numbers nosedive.
Point Projection: 4 points
21. Bernard Berrian (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Dallas
Berrian had a very disappointing regular season, with just four touchdown receptions among his 55 total catches and a little over 600 receiving yards. He’s the fourth option for the Vikings, meaning any big numbers he puts up will be a nice surprise.
Point Projection: 3 points
22. Brad Smith (New York Jets) @ San Diego
Smith caught one pass for one yard last week, and ran the ball twice for four yards out of the Wildcat. That’s a regular formation in New York’s offense, and that means opportunities for Smith. He probably won’t pick up huge yards or find the end zone, but he will put a few fantasy points on the board.
Point Projection: 3 points
23. Legedu Naanee (San Diego Chargers) vs. New York Jets
Naanee is nothing but a complementary piece to the Chargers’ offensive puzzle, and one who was injured at the end of the season, at that. He suffered a foot injury and didn’t play in Week 17, so his status is certainly questionable, but if he does suit up, expect to see what he’s given you all year – very little.
Point Projection: 2 points
24. Jerheme Urban (Arizona Cardinals) @ New Orleans
Urban is the Cardinals’ fifth wideout, and last week in Arizona’s playoff win over the Packers, caught one pass for 15 yards. On a team with so many offensive weapons, that’s going to be about the norm for Urban.
Point Projection: 1 points
25. Kevin Ogletree (Dallas Cowboys) @ Minnesota
Ogletree has caught four passes over his last four games, including one last week in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, but it went for just five yards. He’s very much a spare part, and one that should have minimal impact, if any at all.
