With many of you out there in Bruno Boys Nationplaying our Fantasy Football Playoff Challenge, we want to make sure you enter the Divisional Round knowing what players we feel you should play with caution. Obviously it’s your team and your gut, so you are the final decision makers, but if these guys fail to get the job done for your fantasy squad don’t say the Bruno Boys didn’t tell you so. With that being said the Bruno Boys present the Fantasy Football Divisional Round Sit Ems.
QUARTERBACKS – SIT ‘EM
Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys) @ Minnesota
If there is one quarterback that could struggle this weekend, it’s Tony Romo (Not counting young QBs Mark Sanchez and Joe Flacco as you shouldn’t even be considering them). The Minnesota Vikings’ pass defense wasn’t exactly dominant (#21 in the NFL), but their pass rush is second to none. If they are able to disrupt Romo early, he could be forced into making mistakes. Romo could still be good for 17 fantasy points, but QBs Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, and Peyton Manning should all trump Romo’s production quite easily.
RUNNING BACKS – SIT ‘EM
Joseph Addai (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Baltimore
Addai has never really been that stud running back that you can rely on for big fantasy points, mainly due to his lack of yardage - he failed to top 80 yards rushing in any contest this season. He goes up against a Baltimore Ravens’ defense that allowed the third least fantasy points to the RB position, and only gave up 9 points to Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk and Sammy Morris combined during Wild Card weekend. Granted, the New England Patriots were playing from behind, but consider the fact that Peyton Manning plans on throwing and that Addai has to share some carries with RB Donald Brown, and he’s not in line for great fantasy production this weekend.
Mike Bell (New Orleans Saints) vs. Arizona
Nobody really knows how the carries/receptions out of the backfield will work with the New Orleans Saints’ offense. Part of their mystique is that they change personnel so often and mix up looks to give the opposing defenses fits. Well, Bell figures to be the third running back in line to see carries/touches, and with the potential for a shoot-out, Reggie Bush could definitely be the leader of the backfield this weekend for the Saints.
WIDE RECEIVERS – SIT ‘EM
Vincent Jackson (San Diego Chargers) vs. New York Jets
Vincent Jackson’s height and length may be able to counter some of Darrelle Revis’ cover skills, but we figure that the Jets corner will blanket him plenty well this weekend. Fortunately for the Chargers, they have enough playmakers that even without Vincent Jackson posting a big game, they should be able to move the ball and put up points on the Jets. If you drafted Jackson for the entire playoffs, hope that the Chargers can win, so he can be of some real value during the AFC Championship game.
Steve Breaston & Early Doucet (Arizona Cardinals) @ New Orleans
It’s not that either of these two players are guaranteed to perform poorly, however, both found themselves in a great situation with fellow wide receiver Anquan Boldin out during Wild Card weekend. With the news that Boldin is possibly going to play (questionable at the moment), Breaston and Doucet’s stocks drop off pretty rapidly. Doucet now becomes the fourth option, and Breaston won’t be relied upon, as he was to fill Boldin’s void in the line-up as he was last week. They could both put up 50-70 yards, but their touchdowns will probably be vultured away.
TIGHT ENDS – SIT ‘EM
Todd Heap (Baltimore Ravens) @ Indianapolis
It’s hard to trust any receivers that Baltimore has to offer, so even though Heap is the third option in the air for quarterback Joe Flacco, his prospects of performing at a Gatesian level is not going to happen. The Colts were actually the best team defending the tight end in all of 2009, allowing slightly over 3 fantasy points per contest to the position. Heap isn’t trustworthy enough this weekend, especially with the unknown play of his QB Flacco.
KICKERS – SIT ‘EM
Jay Feely (New York Jets) @ San Diego
Unless you’re getting points for punts (he really did do a valiant job with 3 punts inside the Bengals 20), his value is down this weekend against the Chargers. The only game not being played in a dome (is that the first time this has ever happened?), the weather in San Diego should be good for kicking conditions. However, the Jets could struggle to post points, and in a week where there could be so many shoot-outs, does it really make sense to use Feely as your kicker? We don’t think so either…
DEFENSES – SIT ‘EM
Minnesota Vikings D/ST vs. Dallas
Looking around the schedule this weekend, the only game that seems low scoring would be the Chargers/Jets game, with the Chargers probably limiting the Jets nicely. Other than that, most of these contests, at least on paper, appear that they will be relatively high-scoring contests without much defense. The Vikings are one of the better fantasy defenses in the playoffs this year, but expectations shouldn’t be too high against a high-powered Dallas Cowboys offense that seems to be clicking at the moment.
