QUARTERBACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons)

Before going any further, let us clarify that with plenty of bad quarterbacks under center across the NFL, it’s not wise to cut Ryan from your fantasy roster at this point and time; however, things are moving in that direction. For the moment, though, simply remove Ryan from your starting line-up and stash him on your bench with the hope that he can turn things around.

Ryan’s sophomore season started off strong as the Falcons’ quarterback went for 17+ fantasy points in three of his first four games. During that stretch, Ryan completed 66.7% of his passes for 977 passing yards and seven touchdowns, while throwing just two interceptions. He, also, added a rushing score for good measure. Things, though, have gone south in his past four outings as Ryan has reached the double digit plateau just once, an 11-point outing in week 6. In fact, in his last four games, Ryan has connected on just 55.2% of his throws for a mere 807 passing yards and 6 TDs. What’s even more concerning is the rate at which Ryan is turning the ball over. Thanks to eight interceptions and two loss fumbles, Ryan is averaging 2.5 turnovers per contest over these last four weeks.

Whether it’s a sophomore slump or something more, the fact of the matter is that until Ryan takes better care of the ball and improves his accuracy, fantasy owners should stay away.

Keep Them Cut - JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders), Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers), Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins), Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions), Marc Bulger (St. Louis Rams), Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns), Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills), Kerry Collins (Tennessee Titans), Shaun Hill (San Francisco 49ers)

RUNNING BACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Darren Sproles (San Diego Chargers)

LaDainian Tomlinson may not be producing like he used to, but the Chargers’ still think enough of him to continue to feed him the rock. That’s bad news for Sproles. After all, if you’re not touching the ball, you’re not going to be putting up fantasy points.

Since LT’s return from injury in week 4, Sproles has tallied just 12 rush attempts and hauled in just 11 of Philip River’s passes. The limited body of work has translated into limited production as Sproles has amassed just 80 rush yards, 108 receiving yards, and one score in the Chargers’ last five games. Yes, we know the diminutive back can put up the big day as evidenced by his three double digit performances on the year; however, he, also, has three outings of two or less fantasy points this season. With the bye weeks nearly over, the type of inconsistency that Sproles offers is not something you want on your fantasy roster. Sproles should only be kept as an insurance policy by LT’s owners.

Mike Bell (New Orleans Saints)

Bell has no one to blame but himself for his presence on this list. With football being a game of “what have you done for me lately,” what’s fresh in head coach, Sean Payton’s mind is not the 229 rush yards and TD Bell had in weeks one and two while filling in for injured teammate Pierre Thomas. Rather, Payton is thinking about the fumble Bell had in week 8, which nearly led to a miraculous comeback by the Atlanta Falcons.

As a result of coughing up the ball, Bell had just five carries to Pierre Thomas’ 13 in week 9, leading to a pedestrian one fantasy point thanks to 17 rush yards. Bell has just a combined three fantasy points over the past two weeks, and it appears that he’s, now, the odd man out in the Saints’ backfield. Once a flex-type play, Bell’s relevance is curbed until either Thomas or Reggie Bush goes down.

Keep Them Cut - Michael Bush (Oakland Raiders),Willis McGahee (Baltimore Ravens), Jerome Harrison (Cleveland Browns), Fred Jackson (Buffalo Bills), LenDale White (Tennessee Titans)
