QUARTERBACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Mark Sanchez (New York Jets)

Behind the stellar play of Mark Sanchez the New York Jets started out the season 3-0 and everyone was talking about how the rookie had the poise of a veteran quarterback. During that span Sanchez averaged 202 passing yards per contest and combined for five touchdowns while turning the football over just three times. It’s been downhill since for the Jets first year signal caller. New York has dropped six of their last seven games and Sanchez has been a large part of the problem. Over the last seven games Sanchez has just a 48.9 completion percentage and has a 6:14 touchdown to interception ratio. With the bye weeks being over and the Jets facing tough pass defenses (Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills) over the next two weeks it’s time to cut bait with Sanchez. Instead target a backup quarterback with a better schedule down the stretch or use his roster spot to block your competition from addressing their needs through your leagues waiver wire.

Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens)

Before we get into detail about why Joe Flacco is worth cutting let it be known that we only suggest you part ways with Flacco if you are the owner of a ‘must start’ quarterback and need help at another position. In just his second season under center Flacco got off to a hot start and over the first four games he led the Baltimore Ravens to a 3-1 record while completing 63 percent of his passes. for 1,103 passing yards and eight touchdowns. However, since the Ravens Week 7 bye they have started to run the football more and Flacco has been shaky. Despite completing passes at a 67 percent rate over the last four games, Flacco has failed to throw for 200 yards in any of those games and has just one touchdown against three turnovers. Outside of a match-up against the Detroit Lions (Week 14) the Ravens have a less than desirable schedule and if Flacco doesn’t turn it around soon it will be tough to rely on him against Detroit with your season likely on the line.

Keep Them Cut - JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders), Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins), Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions), Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns), Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills), Kerry Collins (Tennessee Titans), Shaun Hill (San Francisco 49ers), Kyle Orton (Denver Broncos)

RUNNING BACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Marshawn Lynch (Buffalo Bills)

After missing three games due to suspension Marshawn Lynch was supposed to come back and be the workhorse in a run first Buffalo Bills offense. That hasn’t been the case. Lynch struggled right out of the gate and has failed to find his stride in an offense that averages just 275 yards per game. Running behind a inexperienced offensive line Lynch has only been able to muster 3.1 yards per carry and has failed to reach 70 or more rushing yards in a game. In Week 11 against the Jacksonville Jaguars the third year running back had 18 yards on eight carries and had to leave the game in the second quarter with an apparent left shoulder injury. Injury related or not, Lynch has no business being on your fantasy roster. The Bills have one of the toughest schedules against the run over the next six weeks and the poor play of Lynch, combined with the entire Bills offense, makes him waiver wire material.

Ladell Betts (Washington Redskins)

The addition of Ladell Betts to our Cut Them Loose list has nothing to do with his production of late, instead it has to do with his health. Betts went down early in the Washington Redskins loss to the Dallas Cowboys with an torn MCL injury and he is expected to miss significant time. What’s unfortunate about this situation is that Betts was fresh off one of the best games of his career. In Week 10, filling in for Clinton Portis (concussion), Betts ran for 114 yards and a touchdown while leading a resurgent Redskins’ offense to a 27-17 victory over the Denver Broncos. With Portis already ruled out of action in Week 12 the Redskins’ will turn to journeyman Rock Cartwright to carry the load. Against the Cowboys Cartwright went for 140 yards on 20 touches and he will be a hot pick-up on this weeks waiver wire.

Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts)

One of the hottest topics this preseason was how rookie running back Donald Brown was going to surpass Joseph Addai as the lead back for the Indianapolis Colts. Things, though, don’t always work out as expected. Outside of three good games over the seasons first month Brown has been non-existent in the Colts high powered offense. Since returning from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss two games, Brown has touched the ball nine times and has 32 total yards to show for it. During the same span, Addai has 32 touches for 149 total yards and three touchdowns. With it being clear that Brown’s role in the Colts’ offense is nothing more than a back-up you are probably better off addressing a weakness at another position. Unless you are an Addai owner and keeping Brown as insurance do yourself a favor and cut him loose.

Keep Them Cut - Darren Sproles (San Diego Chargers), Willis McGahee (Baltimore Ravens), Jerome Harrison (Cleveland Browns), Fred Jackson (Buffalo Bills), LenDale White (Tennessee Titans), Julius Jones (Seattle Seahawks), Michael Bush (Oakland Raiders), Correll Buckhalter (Denver Broncos)
