QUARTERBACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE
Carson Palmer (Cincinnati Bengals)
It’s amazing how quick things have changed for Carson Palmer. In a Week 7 victory over the Chicago Bears, Palmer torched them for 233 passing yards and five touchdowns en route to a 146.7 QB rating. After that game; however, the Cincinnati Bengals went on a bye and Palmer has not been able to find his groove Since Week 7, Palmer has just three touchdown passes to three interceptions and with the Bengals turning to the running game it has led to four straight games in which Palmer has single-digit fantasy performances. His latest, was a lackluster outing in Week 13 against a Detroit Lions defense that entered the game ranked 32nd against the pass having allowed opposing quarterbacks to throw for 27 touchdowns in just 11 games. Palmer completed 17-of-29 passes for 220 yards and a score but it was his three turnovers that let down his fantasy football owners. With the fantasy playoffs set to kickoff in Week 14-16 it’s not the time to let Palmer try and right ship on your fantasy roster. Unless your starting QB is inconsistent like Palmer you are better off parting ways with the six year veteran out of USC.
Matt Cassel (Kansas City Chiefs)
If you are included in the small percentage of fantasy football players who own Matt Cassel as an insurance policy to your starting quarterback it’s officially time to cut him from your roster. Instead of wasting a roster space on a dead-beat quarterback in a bad offense use him spot to either work the wire for another signal caller or add depth elsewhere. In a Week 13 blowout loss to the Denver Broncos, Cassel was just 10-for-29 for 84 passing yards and was picked off twice by a swarming Broncos secondary. After throwing two interceptions in the third quarter Chiefs head coach Todd Haley had seen enough and he benched Cassel in favor of Brodie Croyle. Reports out of Kansas City are that Cassel will remain the starter, but a quarterback that has just three touchdowns to seven turnovers over the last four games and is on a short leash has no business being on your roster at this stage of the season.
Keep Them Cut - Mark Sanchez (New York Jets), JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders), Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins), Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions), Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns), Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills), Kerry Collins (Tennessee Titans), Shaun Hill (San Francisco 49ers), Kyle Orton (Denver Broncos), Jay Cutler (Chicago Bears), Kyle Orton (Denver Broncos), Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons)
RUNNING BACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE
When looking at the running back position it’s tough to suggest you cutting bait with anyone based on their Week 13 performance. With that being said, let’s take a look at some options that are worth owning but you should proceed with caution when starting them.
Fred Jackson (Buffalo Bills)
Jackson has made a few appearances in this article throughout the season and after a two touchdown performance in Week 12 he was removed from our Keep Them Cut. With new Buffalo Bills head coach Perry Fewell believing that Jackson, not Marshawn Lynch, gives the team the best chance to win we can’t suggest you drop him, but make sure you limit your expectations. Jackson was held to just 55 total yards on 16 touches last week and outside of a Week 14 match-up against the Kansas City Chiefs his fantasy playoff schedule isn’t all that intriguing. If you own Jackson he makes for a tempting Flex play in Week 14 but other than that he is better off reserved.
LeSean McCoy (Philadelphia Eagles)
No, we are not suggesting you drop McCoy; however, we are suggesting that you exhaust all possibilities before plugging him into your fantasy football lineup. In Week 12 we saw McCoy lose goal-line carries to Eldra Buckley and this week the rookie could manage just two rushing yards on six carries. McCoy did catch three passes for 24 yards out of the backfield but both Buckley and Leonard Weaver split touches with him and this should be cause for concern. There is no word when Brian Westbrook is going to return from a concussion injury, so McCoy should still see plenty of touches, but with the Philadelphia Eagles facing a difficult schedule (@ NYG - Week 14, SF - Week 15, DEN - Week 16) against the run during the fantasy football playoffs he makes a risky play.
Keep Them Cut - Marshawn Lynch (Buffalo Bills), Ladell Betts (Washington Redskins), Willis McGahee (Baltimore Ravens), LenDale White (Tennessee Titans), Julius Jones (Seattle Seahawks), Michael Bush (Oakland Raiders), Correll Buckhalter (Denver Broncos), Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts), Bernard Scott (Cincinnati Bengals)
