Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 15 Tight End Rankings
1. Vernon Davis (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Detroit
Davis disappointed last week in a superb match-up against the Philadelphia Eagles, hauling in just three passes for 43 yards. He also failed to catch a touchdown pass for the first time in four games; however, look for him to find his way back into the end zone this week against a Detroit Lions team that has allowed more touchdowns to opposing tight ends than any other team in the NFL.
Point Projection: 14 points
2. Antonio Gates (San Diego Chargers) @ Tennessee
Gates caught his fourth touchdown in his last four games last week in the Chargers’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals. That was part of a four-reception, 33-yard effort in the contest. His yard total represented a season-low, but he saved fantasy football owners with the touchdown grab. He’ll put up better numbers this week against a Tennessee Titans team that has allowed more receptions to opposing tight ends than all but four other teams in the league.
Point Projection: 13 points
3. Tony Gonzalez (Atlanta Falcons) vs. Buffalo
Gonzalez only hauled in three passes for 32 yards last week, but one of those receptions was a game-winning touchdown in Atlanta’s game with the New York Jets. That was a difficult match-up for him, and this week’s contest against the Buffalo Bills could also be termed complicated. Only seven teams in the league have given up fewer receptions to opposing tight ends, but Gonzalez isn’t just any other tight end, as we are all very aware.
Point Projection: 12 points
4. Jermichael Finley (Green Bay Packers) vs. Seattle
Finley’s nine receptions last week were a season-high for him, and he led the team in Green Bay’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also scored a touchdown in the contest and gained 74 yards, marking the third consecutive game in which he put up at least 70 yards. He should deliver this week against the Seattle Seahawks, who have given up more catches to opposing tight ends than all but three other NFL teams.
Point Projection: 12 points
5. Fred Davis (Washington Redskins) vs. Dallas
As expected, Davis had a big performance against the New York Giants last week, catching five passes for 65 yards and one touchdown. It was his fourth straight game with a score, and third game in a row with 50 or more receiving yards. He’s clearly rolling right now, so even though he had only two catches for 24 yards the last time Washington and the Dallas Cowboys met up, you can start him with confidence.
Point Projection: 11 points
6. Dallas Clark (Indianapolis Colts) vs. New York Jets
Clark had a huge game against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, with seven catches for 95 yards and two scores. However, there are some question marks about him this week, most of which has to do with playing time. How much will he get? Will the Colts rest him? Also, his match-up is tough. Only two teams have allowed fewer catches to opposing tight ends than the New York Jets.
Point Projection: 10 points
7. Brent Celek (Philadelphia Eagles) vs. Denver
Celek was a bit banged up last week, but he still managed four receptions for 73 yards in the Eagles’ win over the San Francisco 49ers. However, he has a tough match-up this week against Denver Broncos. They’ve given up the third-fewest receptions (tied with the Jets) to opposing tight ends in the league. Still, his overall production this season makes him a solid option on a weekly basis.
Point Projection: 9 points
8. Jason Witten (Dallas Cowboys) @ Washington
Witten caught five passes for 44 yards last week in Dallas’ upset over the New Orleans Saints, and those numbers are nearly identical to the ones he had the last time he played the Washington Redskins. In that game he had five catches for 43 yards. The match-up here is a difficult one for Witten, as only two teams have given up fewer touchdowns to opposing tight ends than Washington.
Point Projection: 8 points
9. Visanthe Shiancoe (Minnesota Vikings) @ Chicago
In a tough game for the Minnesota offense on every level, Shiancoe could only come up with three catches for 24 yards in the Vikings’ loss to the Carolina Panthers. It was his third consecutive game with fewer than 25 receiving yards, but that should be remedied this week. He had five receptions for 51 yards and one touchdown in his last meeting with the Chicago Bears, a team that has given up the second-most touchdowns (tied) to opposing tight ends in the NFL.
Point Projection: 8 points
10. Kellen Winslow (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @ New Orleans **CHECK INJURY STATUS**
Winslow led the Buccaneers with six receptions for 93 yards last week in Tampa’s win over the Seattle Seahawks. It was his third-highest yard total of the season, and with Sammie Stroughter out, he should be even more of a focal point in Tampa’s passing game. However, Winslow managed just five catches for 29 yards against the New Orleans Saints in his last meeting with them, and they’re tied with the San Francisco 49ers for fewest touchdowns in the league allowed to opposing tight ends.
Point Projection: 7 points
11. Heath Miller (Pittsburgh Steelers) vs. Baltimore
Miller had a season-high 118 yards on seven receptions last week in Pittsburgh’s last-second win over the Green Bay Packers. Based on that, he’ll likely be a popular selection this week, and he certainly has the capability to deliver, but for the most part he’s played well when he has a good match-up, and not well when he’s had a poor match-up. This week he takes on the Baltimore Ravens, and that qualifies as a poor match-up, as they’ve allowed the second-fewest receptions in the league to opposing tight ends, and held Miller to one catch for two yards in Week 12.
Point Projection: 6 points
12. John Carlson (Seattle Seahawks) @ Green Bay
With Nate Burleson out last week, the Seahawks spread it around a bit more than usual, and Carlson had his best game since Week 1, catching a season-high seven passes for 86 yards with one touchdown. It was the second week in a row he’s scored a touchdown, and he faces a Green Bay Packers team this week that has allowed more touchdowns to opposing tight ends than all but five other teams.
Point Projection: 6 points
13. Bo Scaife (Tennessee Titans) vs. San Diego
Scaife led all Titans players with five receptions on eight targets last week in Tennessee’s overtime win against the Miami Dolphins, and he managed to gain 40 yards in the contest. It was his fourth consecutive game with at least 40 yard. San Diego has been difficult against opposing tight ends this season, allowing the third-fewest receptions in the league to them.
Point Projection: 6 points
14. Anthony Fasano (Miami Dolphins) vs. Houston
Fasano caught the only touchdown pass from Chad Henne last week in Miami’s loss to the Tennessee Titans. That catch was one of his four for 36 yards in the game. He has a decent match-up this week, as the Houston Texans have allowed the ninth-most receiving yards to opposing tight ends in the league.
Point Projection: 6 points
15. Greg Olsen (Chicago Bears) vs. Minnesota
Olsen has had a miserable go of it in his last few games, and his one-catch, eight-yard performance last week means he’s had a total of five catches for 23 yards in his last three games. But he did have seven catches for 45 yards in his last meeting with the Minnesota Vikings, who have allowed the third-most catches to opposing tight ends in the league.
Point Projection: 5 points
