QUARTERBACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Shaun Hill (San Francisco 49ers)

In Week 7, Hill was off to a slow start, in which he completed just 6 of 11 passes for 45 yards, and the 49ers were down 21-0 on the road to the Houston Texans when head coach Mike Singletary decided he had seen enough. With Hill struggling for the second consecutive game and the 49ers down three touchdowns Singletary benched his signal caller in favor of Alex Smith and the move paid off. Smith led a resurgent second half passing attack and finished the game completing 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns (all to tight end Vernon Davis).

After the game Singletary would not commit to naming a Week 8 starter but with Smith lighting a fire in the stagnant San Francisco passing offense we don’t see how they can go back to Hill. Over the 49ers first give games he was third worst at the NFL in completion percentage (56 percent) and had just five touchdown passes against three turnovers. Hill was used more as a game manager but with the 49ers defense looking vulnerable against the pass and having some tough matchups on the horizon they need a quarterback can throw the football down the field and Smith, not Hill, is that guy. Even if Hill keeps his job he hold little fantasy football value and is better off being dumped for depth at the RB or WR position.

Keep Them Cut - JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders), Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers), Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins), Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions), Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns), Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills), Kerry Collins (Tennessee Titans)

RUNNING BACKS — CUT THEM LOOSE

Leon Washington (New York Jets)

Unfortunately for the New York Jets and Leon Washington fantasy owners the versatile running back broke his fibula in the first quarter of the Jets shutout victory over the Oakland Raiders. According to NFL.com, Washington will need surgery and miss the remainder of the 2009 season. Leading up to the injury Washington was averaging 6.2 fantasy points per game and was being used as a Flex option in 12-team leagues. With the news that Washington will miss the season it now opens up the door for rookie running back Shonn Greene to compliment Thomas Jones in a solid Jets running game. Seeing significant playing time for the first time in Week 7, Greene had 19 carries for 144 rushing yards and two touchdowns thus making him a hot fantasy football waiver wire pickup entering Week 8.

Fred Jackson (Buffalo Bills)

Fantasy owners who started Jackson over the seasons first three weeks saw him produce as a RB1 and were rewarded with 44 fantasy points and 425 total yards. However, Week 4 marked the return of starting running back Marshawn Lynch and it’s been a downward spiral for Jackson and his fantasy football owners. It was believed that the early success of Jackson would force Buffalo coach Dick Jauron to have a committee back field but that hasn’t been the case. Over the last three games Jackson has just 35 touches and nine fantasy points while Lynch had 68 touches and 28 fantasy points and is seeing all the goal line touches. To make things worse, Jackson, who has excelled in the passing game, has just two receptions since Week 4 while Lynch has nine receptions.

In Week 7, Jackson had five carries for two rushing yards and failed to catch a pass for the second straight week. As the season progresses expect Lynch to continue to be the featured back while Jackson is relegated to back-up duties, thus making him expandable unless you own him as a handcuff to Lynch.

Keep Them Cut - Julius Jones (Seattle Seahawks), LenDale White (Tennessee Titans), Willis McGahee (Baltimore Ravens), Jerome Harrison (Cleveland Browns)

Nice work on this list as always. I really enjoy reading Bruno Boys content because it always gives the facts behind why something should be done.

I am an owner of Fred Jackson in two leagues and Pierre Garcon in one league and will make sure to dump them once the waiver wire opens up on Wednesday.

Thanks Again Bruno Boys

My starting TE is Tony Gonzalez and has been a major disapointment so far, how long should I keep playing him? My back-up TE is Brent Celek, who is also being hampered by inconsistent QB play…4-5 targets per game isn’t cutting the mustard…suggestions anyone!!!
