After 12 seasons in the NFL, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner announced his retirement today and once again there’s talk about whether his career achievements are Hall of Fame worthy. The Bruno Boys would like to know what our members think about Kurt Warner and his career. Vote in our poll and tell us why Warner does or doesn’t merit a place in Canton. Thanks!

Warner should be a first ballot Hall of Fame selection in my opinion. In a relatively short career, 12 years, he put up some amazing statistics and did so without playing in all that many games (125 total).  Throw in a NFL MVP award, a Super Bowl Ring (3 Super Bowl Appearances), four Pro Bowl’s and six seasons of 3,400 passing yards and 20 TDs and you have yourself a Hall of Famer.

Here is a good blurb from Bob Baum of the Associated Press…

In a comparison with the 14 quarterbacks to make the Hall of Fame in the last 25 years, Warner has a better career completion percentage, yards per pass attempt and yards per game. Only Dan Marino, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning have more career 300-yard passing games.

In 125 regular-season games, Warner completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 32,344 yards and 208 touchdowns. He and Fran Tarkenton are the only NFL quarterbacks to throw for 100 touchdowns and 14,000 yards for two teams.

Kurt Warner was a fun quarterback to watch and was a great story for the NFL. He will be missed.

I had to give him a no…the big goose egg in the middle of his career is too much for me to ignore

I think he will be a guy up for consideration annually once eligible but will always lose out to other more career worthy candidates

Mind you I think he is worthy of that consideration and I would have no huge objections if he made it in…

100% Hall of Fame material. I agree with Cavigs that he should be a 1st ballot selection. He owns the top 3 superbowl passing performances. He was the fastst QB to ever reach 10000 yards passing and Tied Dan Marino for the fastest to 30000. Only Marino has more 300 yard passing games. Plus, his story is the stuff of fiction. He was(is) a great player and is a great person and role model. If you want more convincing on the merits of why Warner is one of the greats that deserves to be in the hall, check out Jay Mariotti’s article on him. http://jay-mariotti.fanhouse.com/2010/01/28/warner-rare-great-who-shouldnt-retire

1st Ballot easy. I am a Patriots fan and could care less about the teams he played for but the stuff he accomplished? \rams Crappy to the greatest show on turf and then Cardinals-Superbowl not to mention his 3 highest passing yardage games in the Superbowl- 2 time League MVP and 1 superbowlk MVP. I can’t stand listening to peeps say that he is not a first ballot HOFamer.  If the G-men didn’t have Eli up Kurt’s ass so the poor guy could have concentrated it would have been Warner in the Superbowl for the Giants.

Being a 49ers fan, Kurt Warner burned me so many times from 1999-2009 in the NFC West. His ability to dominate his position (especially during the Rams Super Bowl years) makes him a no-doubter Hall of Famer. Personally, I think there is a chance he doesn’t make first ballot just based on the fact that his highs were short-lived and his longevity isn’t up there with the best ever at QB. But he was remarkable when given time, threw up some of the greatest QB seasons ever, and led his team to three Super Bowls. He deserves to be there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes a year.

Our morning sports talk radio guy said the other day while discussing the new HOF inductees said “If you have to ask/wonder if a guy belongs, he doesnt”

That about sums it up for me

It’s a good point, but the HOF seems to be more lenient than it really should be. Specifically in baseball, if a guy is on the ballot for 15 years, he can make it in his 15th season. So MLB HOF voters are saying that he didn’t deserve it for 14 years, but now his numbers are worthy? I think this proves that while your quote should be the HALL OF FAME standard, it isn’t.

Jacob… I agree regarding Warner being a Hall of Famer and can see how people might not vote for him the first time around. Still the guy did enough in my opinion to be Canton bound.

Regarding burning the 49ers… he sure did pick the 49ers apart early on in his career as a member of the Rams but San Francisco seemed to have his number while in Arizona. He had just one TD and four INTs this season and over the last three years against SF he managed just 7 TDs to 6 INTs but what has saved him from a fantasy perspective is his 295 yard per game average.

Dating back to his days with St. Louis you will find the domination on our beloved 49ers. The early years helped lead to his success against San Francisco. In 14 career games against San Francisco Warner went for 24 TDs, 14 INTs and 271 yards per game (13 more than his career average).

I could be wrong Jacob but with Warner out of town in Arizona it looks like the 49ers will enter 2010 as the trendy pick to win the NFC West!

Marc,

I think in regards to him beating us with the Cardinals, I meant more against other teams than us. He is the sole reason we weren’t able to make it into the playoffs this season, but not because we couldn’t beat him.

The 49ers are the trendy pick, although I think a few people will guess that the Seahawks can re-take the top of the NFC West (I obviously don’t).

Jacob…. solid points about Warner going off on another teams and being one of the main reasons as to why the 49ers couldn’t get over the hump in the NFC West the past few years. Being a 49ers fan I will enjoy not seeing him destroy the Rams and Seahawks twice a year but I will miss watching Warner orchestrate an offense. He made things look easy and Warner’s ability to light up the scoreboard in minutes was second to none. I can recall at least 20 times while he was in Arizona that the Cardinals put a touchdown on the board in less than five minutes.

With the NFC West being wide open the Sea Chickens do have a shot to win the division but I see too many flaws in their offense. Hasselbeck can’t stay healthy, the offensive line is mediocre at best, their run game is lacking talent and I like their wide outs but they don’t have a true play maker on the outside.

It’s only February and I already want the 2010 NFL season to start… can we somehow fast forward seven months?
